The President

The President of the Republic, elected separately by Parliament (two-thirds majority) to an independent five-year term (maximum 2 terms), is the Head of State.

The President has limited, largely ceremonial powers, and serves as a symbol of national unity.

However, the President’s role in issuing laws gives him the ability to return legislation to Parliament for further debate or to forward it to the constitutional court if he deems any of its provision unconstitutional.
